Symptoms of meningococcal infection include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, and drowsiness. Vomiting, photophobia, or rash may also occur. Severe cases can cause brain damage, resulting in intellectual impairment, intellectual disability, deafness, electrolyte imbalance, or even death. Invasive meningococcal infection can also cause arthritis, myocarditis, endophthalmitis, or pneumonia. Meningococcal infection is a serious illness and patients must receive antibiotic treatment as soon as possible. Close contacts of patients must be under medical surveillance to detect early signs and take preventive medication if necessary.
